After a website tease, a video leak and wild speculation, CD Projekt RED is pleased to announce The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf, coming to PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system and Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in Fall 2009. Atari is publishing the game in most of the world, with CD Projekt publishing in Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia. A Russian publishing deal will be announced in the near future.

The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf brings console gamers the same acclaimed story seen in The Witcher, the PC RPG of the Year that won more than 100 awards and sold more than a million copies. The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf is built from the ground up to be the ultimate console RPG, featuring a brand new game engine developed in cooperation with Lyon-based Widescreen Games that delivers a new dynamic action-based combat system, beautiful graphics and lots of other features that take full advantage of the consoles’ capabilities and controls.

Rise of the White Wolf is built upon the DaVinci engine, created by our friends at Widescreen Games in Lyon… it's allowing us to create the best game we possibly can, without reducing the amount of content or taking any hits on quality. Aurora worked well for the PC game because it was built as PC technology, but it would have taken a ton of work to move the engine to consoles, and we would have had to make some sacrifices in terms of features or visuals. With the number of new features and changes we're making – particularly to the combat system – it just wouldn't have been practical to use Aurora.

Sper ca versiunea de consola, odata cu alegerea noului engine, sa nu aiba aceleasi probleme cu loading-ul care le-a avut pe PC…

nu cred, dar nu avem inca detalii, presupun ca engineul e optimizat pentru console, adica sa aiva streaming si etc

Details are sketchy, but the following facts have been confirmed: after the release of The Witcher, CD Projekt Red took the financial obligation of starting 3 projects simultaneously, a console port of The Witcher, and two more titles based on The Witcher intellectual property, one of which was The Witcher 2.

As the financial crisis hit, the studio was affected as well, finding itself incapable of managing all three projects and forced to lay off a significant portion of its staff. The third Witcher IP project was cancelled, and its entire crew was let go or left of their own volition. A second round of layoffs followed as The Witcher: Rise of the White Wolf was cancelled, including around two dozen people losing their jobs yesterday.

All funds and manpower have been redirected to a single project, The Witcher 2, which will be a multi-platform title for PC and consoles.
