VIA Pico-ITX, un computer de marimea unui pachet de carti

VIA a lansat o nouă platformă, Pico-ITX, ce face un pas înainte înspre miniaturizare, după ce anunţase în urmă cu trei luni că lucrează la noua platformă.

Noua platformă este cu 75% mai mică decât Mini-ITX, măsurând doar 100*72mm. Pico-ITX se concetrează asupra eficienţei energetice şi dovedeşte eforturile susţinute de VIA pentru adoptarea de soluţii tot mai economice din punctul de vedere al consumului de energie. Modelele de plăci de bază Pico-ITX suportă procesoarele VIA din seria C7 şi pe cele din seria Eden (răcite pasiv). Placa de bază este construită în jurul chipsetului VIA VX700, o solutie ce conţine grafică integrată şi alte funcţii multimedia importante.

Agena, K10 pictured running

We told you before K10, Agena works just fine. We had a chance to witness it and we can even prove the existence of this 65 nanometre part. The Agena processor is an AM2 version and fits in 940 pin boards.
The CPU-Z 1.39 recognizes the CPU Opteron 148 but you can clearly see that this is a 65 nanometre part with 1.273V, with four cores.
It works at 1.9 GHz or 1908 MHZ to be precise with multiplier at 9.5 and the bus speed of 200.9 MHz. The 0.5 multiplier settings are back. You can also clearly see that we are talking about quad core processor with four cores and four threads.
Agena at 1.9 GHz has 4x64KB L1 Data cache memory, 4x64KB L1 for Code, 4x 512 KB L2 cache and finally all cores share the 2048KB L3 cache.

Agena 1.9 GHz overclocks to 3.05 GHz

We've showed you the Agena AM2 CPU at 1.9 GHz and now we have some more. Yesterday we showed you the world's first screenshot of the Agena AM2+ CPU here. What happens if you try to overclock this lovely part? With the default multiplier set to 9.5, you can raise the FSB all the way up to 320 MHz.
You only need to increase the voltage from 1.273 to 1.297V and you hit over 3 GHz or 3042 MHz to be precise. This is an 1142 MHz overclock or 62 per cent from the stock speed and the machine was stable at all times.
So AMD's native quad core is a really overclockable part.

Agena K10 quad runs on today's boards

Nforce 590 SLI overclocking

Last week we showed you the first screenshot of the Agena K10 CPU. You can read all about it here. Now we are ready to disclose a bit more details about the machine. Believe it or not, the future generation AM2 CPU will run at today's motherboards, the Nforce 590 SLI to be more precise.
The amazing 3.05 GHz overclock from last week was done on a retail available motherboard from one of their manufacturers.
The machine was running a quite usual memory setup with 2x1 GB of DDR2 memory. So the good news is that you don’t need to swap your motherboards, you just need abios update and your AM2 boards should be able to cope with Agena processors.
Even the overclocking was done on Nforce 590 SLI motherboard and not on Wahoo or Mako next generation chipsets. Agena FX is the first one, coming in Q3, and Agena will follow at later time.

K10 at 2.5 GHz beats Intel quad at 3.0+

The new K10 based processors will really make Intel run for its money, at least till the end of the year. Just as Intel stole K8's mojo with Merom aka Core 2 Duo and quad, AMD is ready to finally fight back. It took them almost a year to prepare for the big clash.
Barcelona / Agena FX will beat Intel Core 2 Quad at 3.0 GHz+. Intel knows it and it is scared. Intel also knows that it cannot go over 3.0 GHz with 65 nanometre, at least not at 120 W TDP. Some reports already claim that QX6850 with FSB 1333 and 3 GHZ clock is already pushing the envelope as intel's 120W TDP is actually 150W+ at least on AMD's TDP scale. TDP stands for Thermal Design Power.
Intel needs to go over 3.0 GHZ to 3.2 or more to match Barcelona / Agena parts at 2.5 GHz. Intel knows that it needs to go to 3.2+ GHz and it needs the 45 nm Yorkfield core to match Agena 2.5 GHz.
Finally AMD should be able to make 2.7 if not even more with its 65 nm process. Intel has a good fighting chance with next the generation Nehalem core in the second half of 2008.

HyperTransport 3 good for dual sockets

Barcelona and Agena FX / Agena K10 parts won't have the HyperTransport 3 support. These chips are scheduled for Q3 2007 or later and only the late Q3 / early Q4 part Budapest will actually have the magic HyperTransport 3.
For a single socket machine HT3 won't make any difference as you don’t need the fast interconnection. You should not be able to see any significant difference with a single socket quad core processor.
Agena FX might suffer a bit as it will be meant for dual socket, eight core setup. The normal people's Agena AM2+ CPUs wont actually give a damn about HyperTransport 3 at least not that much. HyperTransport 3 is also important for multi chip servers as well. It will make things faster in dual, quad or eight socket setups.
We don’t think that speeding up the interconnection between Northbridge and Southbridge will make much difference anyway.

K10 desktop volume is next year

Opterons and Quad FX parts in 2007 only

AMD won't have much K10 parts for desktops, at least not in 2007. The initial batch of Barcelona K10 parts will be reserved exclusively for servers and at a later date some parts will be released as the Athlon FX socket 1207 parts. This is expected in Q3 2007.
Unfortunately you can expect only a few AM2+ based desktop parts this year and this will happen in Q4 and not before. The real volume production of desktop K10's is scheduled for early next year so it is not that they will be widely available for the pre-Xmas shopping spree.
The good news is that K10 at 2.5 GHz makes Intel's 3GHz run for its money, just as Core 2 Duo makes K8 runs for its.

AMD: Barcelona quad-core 50% faster than Intel’s quad-core Xeon (@TGDaily)

There are lots of question marks surrounding AMD’s first quad-core CPU, the Barcelona server/workstation processor. How fast will it be and - most importantly - will it be able to outpace Intel’s quad-core Xeon 5300-series (“Clovertown”) processors. It will, says AMD, and in fact upgraded its performance expectations.
So far, we the company had claimed that Barcelona will surpass the performance of Clovertown by about 40% at any given clock speed. Now the company says that it believes that Barcelona will have a 50% advantage over Clovertown in floating point applications and 20% in integer performance “over the competition’s highest-performing quad-core processor at the same frequency.”
AMD did not release the specific clock speeds of Barcelona. Intel’s Clovertown currently tops out at 2.66 GHz, but the company has begun supplying limited numbers of 3.0 GHz server quad-core processors.
AMD also announced the new dual-core Opteron models 2222 SE and 8222 SE, which somewhat had been announced already at the beginning of this month: AMD claims that the new 3.0 GHz Opterons beat comparable Intel Xeon 5100 series processors in three server-specific benchmarks (SPECint_rate_2006, SPECint_rate2006, SPECompM2001) by up to 24%.
The 2222 SE is available for a tray price of $873, the 8222 SE is priced at $2149. Intel’s 3.0 GHz Xeon 5160 processor currently sells for $851.

Preparative pentru Serial ATA 3.0

Specificaţiile viitorului standard Serial ATA III nu vor întârzia posibilitatea de a beneficia de rate de transfer de 600 MB/s, faţă de 300 MB/s la prezentul Serial ATA II. În particular, noua interfaţă va reprezenta un câştig pentru configuraţiile RAID şi, de asemenea, va permite creşterea numărului de porturi SATA fără ca la nivelul plăcilor de bază să fie nevoie de implementarea unui controler suplimentar. Lăţimea de bandă propusă de Serial ATA III ar putea îngădui utilizarea multiplicatoarelor de porturi. Pe lângă toate acestea, odată cu trecerea timpului, impresionanta lăţime de bandă şi-ar putea justifica utilitatea prin impulsionarea performanţelor discurilor SSD (Solid State Disk) ce conţin memorie flash, device-uri ce vor cunoaşte consacrarea în anii ce vor urma.

AMD 45 nm Shanghai up and running (@Fudzilla)

Working prototypes, can hit 3GHz+

AMD already has some prototypes of Shanghai native quad core at 45 nm and 6 MB of L3 cache. This unit won't go in production till sometimes next year but at least the marchitecture works.
Sources close to company also confirmed that AMD can 45 nanometre parts without changing the fabs so the usual suspect Dresden fab will get a line to produce these parts.
The best part is that this will allow AMD to reach the 3GHz or fastest clocks and get back in the game versus Intel. TDP, the thermal dissipation of Barcelona or Budapest K10 parts at 3 GHz would just be too much as these parts are 65 nanometre only.
So Penryn and Yorkfield will have Shanghai to make it run for its money all in 2008.

K10 at 2.5 GHz beats QX6800 in multimedia (@Fudzilla)

A 33 to 66 percent faster

In Sandra multimedia benchmark Agena / Barcelona K10 2.5 GHz scores over 400.000 it/s (instructions / second) in integer test and about 300.000 it/s in floating point test. Yeah there are some Agena / Barcelona parts runing at 2.5 GHz at press time and we got the chance to share the scores with the world.
Intel's fastest QX6800 Quad core at 3 GHz scores about ~300.000 it/s in integer and ~180.000 it/s in floating point test.
So at least in multimedia stuff and this synthetic benchmark AMD's native quad core is 33.3 percent faster than Intel's fastest Quad core, while in the floating calculations it is a massive 66 percent faster.
The QX6850 with FSB 1333 might improve the situation a bit, but it won't be enough save the day. Intel needs to go much higher than 3 GHZ to match the 2.5 GHz K10 part.

AMD running out of cash (@Fudzilla)

Raises $1.8 billion

Chipmaker AMD has had to raise more than $1.8 billion or face running out of money by the end of the year.
The company, which is locked in a price cutting war with Intel, said the money will be used to pay off $500 million of a $2.5 billion loan it took out to buy graphics chip maker ATI Technologies in October.
Analysts are warning that the loan is a stop-gap measure likely to get the company through the year and will not solve the company's underlying financial problems.
Intel has been doing extremely well againsts AMD. Its chips are often better and and cheaper to make. Barcelona can change it and save the day for AMD.

Intel a redus preturile

După ce anunţase că pregăteşte unele reduceri, iată că a venit şi această zi. Noile preţuri sunt cu până la 40% în cazul gamei Xeon pentru servere uni-procesor şi în cazul seriei Core 2 Duo 6x00.

Au fost comunicate noile preţuri, însă au fost prezentate şi câteva noi modele de procesoare, în aceiaşi zi. Astfel, în cazul gamei Xeon din seria 3xx0 reducerile se situează între 9% şi 40%, iar procesoarele Core 2 Duo 6x00 beneficiază de asemenea de preţuri cu până la 40% mai mici. Singurul quad-core care a beneficiat de pe urma acestor reduceri este Q6600, preţul acestuia ajungând la $530, cu 38% mai jos. În zonele middle-end şi low-end au fost lansate noile procesoare E6420, E6320 şi E4400. Procesoarele Pentium au preţuri cu 6-37% mai mici.

AMD R600 apare in mai, HD 2900XTX impins pana in 2007 Q3

Chip-ul grafic compatibil DirectX 10 de la AMD, R600 va fi disponibil începând cu data de 19 mai.
Nucleul va fi produs pe 65 nm, trecându-se astfel peste procesul de fabricaţie pe 80 nm. RV610 şi RV630, de asemenea produse pe 65 nm, vor fi lansate în cursul lunii iulie.

Radeon HD 2900 XTX, placă ce va folosi 1024 MB memorie GDDR4, a fost amânată pentru cea de-a treia parte a anului. Motivele sunt aceleaşi cauzate de indisponibilitatea de memorii GDDR4, însă AMD se află într-o situaţie paradoxală, oarecum comică.

Primele memorii DDR3

Memoriile DDR3 vor atinge o frecventa de 1600MHz, dar asta la latente foarte mari (CAS 10). In timp, latentele vor scadea si frecventele vor creste, astfel incat sporul de performanta fata de predecesoarele sale DDR2 se va face simtit.
Buffalo va produce aceasta memorie in variante de 512MB/modul si 1GB/modul. Un modul de 512MB va costa $315, iar un kit 2x512MB va fi $627. De asemenea, un modul de 1GB va costa $595, iar un kit 2x1GB va costa nu mai putin de $1180. Aceste preturi sunt foarte mari, avand in vedere ca 2GB de memorie DDR2 (ma refer la PC2-8500, adica aceeasi frecventa) a ajuns sa coste aproximativ 220-230$.

DFI a anuntat una dintre primele placi de baza bazate pe chipset-ul 680i SLI LT de la nVidia care respecta in mare parte specificatiile date de nVidia.

Inima acestei placi este chipset-ul nForce 680i SLI LT de la nVidia. Asta inseamna ca placa are suport pentru procesoarele cu FSB 1333MHz, sunet onboard Realtek ALC885 (7.1 canale) dar si pentru memoriile DDR2-800 (PC2-6400). De asemenea, alimentarea procesorului se face in 6 faze. Circuitele PWM avansate au posibilitatea de a furniza procesorului curent la 200A, ceea ce este mult prea mult chiar si pentru un overclocking extrem.

Placa se remarca prin cele 4 porturi PCI-Express: trei x16 si unul x4. Astfel, poate fi se pot monta 2 placi in SLI si una pentru calcularea elementelor de fizica (in acest caz, al treilea slot x16 va functiona in mod x8) sau se pot monta 4 placi video in configuratie quad-SLI.

DFI nu a specificat inca un pret pentru acest produs, insa cel mai probabil acesta va fi in jurul sumei de $199.

Solutii Intel Bearlake de la Gigabyte

P35-DQ6 şi P35T-DQ6 reprezintă vârfurile ierarhiei plăcilor de bază Gigabyte care utilizează chipset-uri Bearlake. Fiecare placă deţine câte două sloturi PCI-Express x16, însă numai unul are în realitate 16 linii, cel de-al doilea având 2 sau 4 linii. Aşa cum se ştie însă, lăţimea de bandă oferită de cele 16 linii PCIe nu este încă exploatată în întregime. Şi, oricum, rămâne de văzut dacă prezenţa unui conector PCI Express x4 este relevantă. Plăcile mai dispun de alte trei sloturi PCI Express x1, precum şi de două sloturi PCI. De asemenea, aceste plăci de top sunt echipate cu şase porturi SATA II (3 Gbps), ambele modele descurcându-se cu Matrix RAID. Tot pe partea de stocare vom regăsi şi două porturi SATA, cât şi unul PATA. Pe partea audio este notabilă prezenţa unui chip semnat Realtek ce poate administra sunet pe opt canale. Singura diferenţă între cele două plăci de bază este introdusă de tipul de memorie RAM acceptat. În timp ce P35-DQ6 suportă numai DDR2, P35T-DQ6 este destinată pentru lucrul cu memorii de tip DDR3. Dacă ne vom reaminti faptul că chipset-urile Intel vor fi capabile să gestioneze ambele tipuri de memorie, dar nu concomitent pe aceeaşi placă de bază, vom înţelege că opţiunea Gigabyte a fost aceea de a oferi două plăci de bază diferite din punct de vedere al memoriei suportate.

ECS P35T-A. Aceasta placa nu se remarca prin nimic deosebit. Este destinata segmentului gaming si are performante foarte bune si nu va reprezenta un concurent de temut pe piata placilor de baza.

ECS G33T-M. G33T-M este dotata, dupa cum zice si numele, cu chipset-ul G33. Acest chipset nu este adresat segmentului gaming, desi se descurca si el admirabil. Mai degraba, va fi folosit intr-un sistem multimedia. Placa are video onboard.

MSI P35 Platinum D3 este o placă ce foloseşte noile memorii DDR3 alimentate la 1,5V, fiind suportate module cu viteze de până la 1333 MHz. Ca şi în cazul GigaByte, producătorul va oferi două versiuni ale plăcii: cu DDR2 (P35 Platinum) şi cu DDR3 (P35 Platinum D3).

MSI va acoperi şi zona mainstream, pentru care oferă placa P35 Neo. Placa va oferi porturi FireWire, însă va putea folosi numai memoriile DDR2, urmând a fi lansată şi versiunea P35 Neo Combo care va putea folosi ambele tipuri de memorie, în funcţie de preferinţe.

NVIDIA lanseaza GeForce 8800 Ultra

Revizia nucleului este A3, ceea ce înseamnă că are un potenţial de overlocking destul de crescut, putând atinge frecvenţe mai mari ca în cazul vechiilor nuclee G80.

Placa va fi disponibilă începand cu data de 15 mai 2007. Din păcate, preţul este diferit în intreaga lume: în Germania placa va costa 699 euro, în SUA va fi 829$, 829 euro va fi în Franţa, iar în Anglia se va găsi la preţul de 528 de lire sterline. Sporul de peformanţă nu justifică în nici un caz preţul foarte piperat al plăcii. Preţ care îi va ţine departe pe majoritatea potenţialilor clienţi, aceştia preferând să-şi overlockeze plăcile 8800GTX deja deţinute pentru a atinge un nivel de performanţă aproximativ egal cu cel al lui 8800 Ultra.
