AMD sets a new course for Radeons with its Polaris architecture - The Tech Report - Page 1

JEDEC standards body has now published the specification for GDDR5X graphics memory, affectionately known as JESD232.
As the name implies, the new standard is based on the existing GDDR5 spec, but doubles the range of available bandwidth to 10-14 Gb/s per die. Although those numbers aren't quite as stratospheric as HBM2's ludricous speed, they're certainly nothing to scoff at.
Since GDDR5X uses the same pseudo-open-drain (POD) signaling as its predecessor, it should be relatively easy for GPU makers to take advantage of it. According to earlier rumors, Nvidia and AMD may use GDDR5X in lower-end products and reserve HBM2 for higher-end cards.

"This is clearly a flagship GPU of sorts yet it is shown to be listed with only a 4GB memory channel."

AMD’s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster, confirmed last year that AMD will be leveraging 14nm FinFET technology across its CPU, APU and GPU products. These will include both Polaris and Vega GPUs while Navi is not yet confirmed whether it will use a new process or the current iteration of FinFET node.

FinFET technology is expected to play a critical foundational role across multiple AMD product lines, starting in 2016, GLOBALFOUNDRIES has worked tirelessly to reach this key milestone on its 14LPP process. We look forward to GLOBALFOUNDRIES’ continued progress towards full production readiness and expect to leverage the advanced 14LPP process technology across a broad set of our CPU, APU, and GPU products. – Press Release
AMD’s Polaris architecture-based 14nm FinFET GPUs deliver a remarkable generational jump in power efficiency. Polaris-based GPUs are designed for fluid frame rates in graphics, gaming, VR and multimedia applications running on compelling small form-factor thin and light computer designs.

Way ahead of schedule (the target was late Summer) Micron has started shipping GDDR5X Memory its customers.
Micron Starts Sampling GDDR5X Memory to Customers

Mai avem de asteptat, cine zicea de aprilie-mai cu GDDDR5x se axeaza pe zvonuri si pe PR mincinos.

    What’s Next?
Micron is currently ramping GDDR5X to mass production, and will be announcing sample dates later this spring. We plan to be in full volume production this summer. I also hope to give you an update later this year on performance specifications. Based on the results so far, we believe that GDDR5X has the clear potential to achieve speeds of 14Gbps and potentially beyond.
