Xinjiang has a complex geopolitical history. Han Chinese controlled this area during Han and Tang dynasty before nomad tribes formed an ethnic called Uighur.

In the 18th century, when Qing dynasty took control Xinjiang again, the population of tribal Uighur was estimated to be a quarter of million. The area has been the territory of China since then. There are many other ethnics in Xinjiang besides Uighur and Han. The population of Han has increased from about 10% in 1949 to 40% at present. In 1950s, China sent a large number of youths for building farms from uncultivated land in Xinjiang. Recently, as China is liberalized, many private Han Chinese entrepreneurs have moved to Xinjiang for conducting business. There are also a large number of Uighur people moving to the cities in east coast.
Chinese government gives many privileges to ethnic minorities, such as more kids being allowed per family and lower standard for college entrance exams. Some Uighur in Chinese cities act like Tigans in Romania, committing crime of stealing and robbery at high rate. To avoid ethnic conflict, the police often give much lighter punishment than that given to the Han Chinese who commit similar crimes. I personally don’t like how the Chinese government handles crimes committed by ethnic minorities. In US, ethnic minorities, Black, Latino, and Native Indians (not Asians because of their over-representation) also enjoy some privileges in college admission and employment, but not in crime punishment.
Thanks to the government’s promotion of ethnic harmony, most Han Chinese do not hate ethnic minorities. But if a few minority separatists keep committing violent crimes against innocent Han Chinese as shown in following video by Korean TV, it will unavoidably create hatred toward the minority and eventually it will damage the interest of the whole ethnic minority. Obviously, the ratio is not the same as Serb to Albanian. Be realistic! The independence will never happen unless China completely collapses.
