Red face Mp3 Help !!!

Just having recently purchased an in-dash Kenwood MP3 Player, the topic of MP3 quality has spured some interest in me. I usually use Audiocatalyst to encode my 128K MP3's just to play on my PC. Quality is more of an issue when playing MP3's in my car. I encoded a few MP3's in LAME encoder and the same tracks using Xing encoder. Just listening on my Koss PC speakers, with a Cambridge Subwoofer and satellites, I could hear a difference. I made a friend play the songs without me looking at the screen and EVERYTIME I knew which song was encoded with which encoder! I had passed the taste test with flying colours. I then burned the MP3's to a CDRW to test on my sound system in my car. (consisting of tweeters, 6X9's and a 12" sub). once again, I passed the 'taste' test. To anybody who is interested in MP3 quality, LAME is the way to go, DEFINATELY. Only problem is, the extract AND encode an MP3 on the fly on my PIII-800 with a 52X Sony CDU-5211 takes me 15-20 seconds. LAME takes around 1:30 to 2:00 minutes a song. Big sacrifice, but its worth it if you planning on archiving MP3 to CD-R. Its VERY difficult to distinguish between a LAME encoded MP3 and the original cd."
